Hagia Sophia
The Byzantine Landmarks of Istanbul Series
The Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque of Istanbul was once the principal Christian cathedral of Byzantine Constantinople from 360 to 1453. The current structure was built in only 5 years from 532 to 537 under Byzantine emperor Justinian I. Also known as Sancta Sophia in Latin or Church of God's Holy Wisdom, it was the world's largest church for nearly a thousand years and among the first to employ a fully pendentive dome.

Hagia Eirene
The Byzantine Landmarks of Istanbul Series
The Hagia Eirene or Church of Holy Peace, currently a museum and concert hall, is the oldest known church built in Byzantine Constantinople. The current structure dates to 548 when Emperor Justinian I had it rebuilt after the original building was destroyed in a series of local riots. The structure is also one of the few Byzantine churches in Istanbul that was not converted into a mosque by the Ottoman Turks after the conquest of the city in 1453.

Palace of the Porphyrogennetos
The Byzantine Landmarks of Istanbul Series
Built in the late 13th century by Byzantine emperor Michael VIII Palaiologos as part of the imperial Blachernae Palace complex, this palace structure was named for his "purple-born" son or Porphyrogennetos Constantine. Currently the Istanbul Museum of Ceramics, the building is known in Turkish as Tekfur Sarayi or "Palace of the Sovereign". The restored palace is one of the finest remaining examples of Byzantine secular architecture in Istanbul.

Golden Gate
The Byzantine Landmarks of Istanbul Series
The Golden Gate of Constantinople, Altinkapi in Turkish Istanbul, was the first portal built into the 5th century Theodosian land walls of the imperial city during the Byzantine period. The gate was the main ceremonial entrance to the Byzantine capital during the triumphal victory parades of emperors and imperial coronations. The Golden Gate was incorporated into the Yedikule Fortress built by the Ottoman sultan Mehmed II in 1458 following his conquest of Constantinople.

Aqueduct of Valens
The Byzantine Landmarks of Istanbul Series
The Aqueduct of Valens, known today as Bozdogan Kemeri, was an Ancient Roman aqueduct built in the 4th century to supply the Byzantine capital Constantinople with fresh water from the springs of Thrace. The aqueduct is named after Emperor Valens under whose reign the structure was completed in 373. Repaired and improved by successive Byzantine emperors and Ottoman sultans over the centuries, the final and most visible bridge of the aqueduct survives today in Istanbul's Fatih district.

Pantokrator Monastery
The Byzantine Landmarks of Istanbul Series
Built between 1118 and 1124 by Byzantine emperor John II Komnenos and his wife Empress Irene of Hungary, the Pantokrator Monastery, currently the Zeyrek Mosque in Istanbul, was among the most important monastic institutions in Constantinople. Expanded after the death of Empress Irene, the monastery and church complex grew to include an imperial mausoleum, library, and one of the most advanced hospitals of the late Byzantine period.
